Chapter Seven
Three days.
Three days since Finn had given her control over their futures.
Three days since he’d shown her he trusted her and respected her decision.
Three days since he’d kissed her.
Any guesses as to which was preying on her mind the most?
With a sigh, Fiona forced a smile and a polite nod for the guards at the gate, hoping they wouldn’t see her frustration.
Her longing.
Her intense irritation that Finn had held her in his arms and made her explode in a million tiny pieces, and then put her back together again by being so sweet and wonderful, but now, wouldn’t do it again!
As she made her way down the slope to the village heart, that annoying part of Fiona’s mind, which wouldn’t shut up, was rolling its non-existent eyes again.
Lass, ye’re the one who willnae commit to him. Ye’re the reason he’s holding himself back.
He hadn’t even kissed her again, damn it!
Months and months of being stuck inside by the winter snows, months of poring over each and every one of his letters until she could practically smell him…here she was with him, and he’d brought her the most incredible climax of her life, and he wouldn’t even kiss her.
And it was her own damnable fault.
So was it any wonder she was angry at herself?
She wanted to commit to the man. She wanted to tell him she loved him, and he was everything she wanted in a husband, and of course she’d marry him.
She wanted to kiss him again.
So why hadn’t she?
Three days…
When she reached the village square, she plastered on a smile and returned the polite greetings of the Oliphants. Because if she could just make herself commit, damn it, these people would be her people too.
The little yard behind the blacksmith’s shop was empty, so she poked her head inside. Edward Oliphant, Finn’s stepfather, was pounding away at his anvil with one of his large hammers. Across the shop, young Ned was making…sticks?
Finn’s younger half-brother looked up from his work, and his face lit with an innocent grin. “Ye came back, milady! Would ye like to watch me make nails?”
Nails, huh? That’s what those things were supposed to be?
With a smile—a genuine one this time—Fiona stepped into the shop and crossed to the twelve-year-old. This small forge was where Finn’s twin brother Duncan often worked with his silver and gold…judging by the cot tucked along the back wall, he slept here as well, to protect his work.
“Aye, Ned, of course I’d like to see ye make a nail. Can ye show me how ‘tis done?”
The lad was as enthusiastic as his father was taciturn. From across the shop, Edward nodded politely to her, but didn’t stop his work. She waggled her fingers in a return greeting, but then gave his son her full attention when the lad launched into a narrated process.
Two days ago, Finn had brought her here to introduce her to his family. And, just as he’d promised, they’d made memories. She’d met his kind, though seemingly
